For the past years it is known that the Philippines is the largest contributor of seafarers in world, but now it is seen that China overtakes on numbers.
There are 1,647,500 estimated supply of seafarers in the world according to the 2015 figures from the latest Manpower Report by BIMCO and ICS, released this May 2016.
Now China tops the largest numbers of seafarers based on the estimates of national distributions to the 2015 global supply of seafarers.
Although the Philippines is still the largest source of ratings, China has indeed overtaken Philippines as the largest source of seafarers.
However, data suggests that the numbers of Chinese seafarers available for international service are more limited according to international shipping companies. The Philippines and Russia were also seen as equally important sources of officers, followed closely by Ukraine and India.
The Manpower Report from BIMCO and the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) is the most comprehensive study of the shipping industry’s global workforce, published every five years since 1990.

Over the past years, we can see that there is a growing trend on the global supply of seafarers, which consists of both Officers and Ratings available for internationally trading merchant fleet.Now China tops the largest numbers of seafarers based on the estimates of national distributions to the 2015 global supply of seafarers.

The table shows China is leading on the number of all seafarers followed by the Philippines, Indonesia, Russian Federation and then Ukraine. The table also shows the rank for:- the number of officers in order of China, Philippines, India, Indonesia and then Russian Federation.
